Homes located within a few kilometers of the ocean offer breathtaking views and refreshing sea breezes. However, they also face an invisible enemy: airborne salt. Over time, salt particles settle on exterior surfaces, including window and door screens, triggering a chemical process known as corrosion.
For security screens, corrosion isn't just an aesthetic problem. It can weaken wire strands, reduce cutting resistance, and ultimately compromise the very protection the screen is designed to provide.
This is why salt spray testing matters-especially for coastal residential projects.
What Is Salt Spray Testing?
Salt spray testing (also known as salt fog testing) is a standardized accelerated corrosion test method. It involves placing a material sample inside a sealed chamber and exposing it to a continuous, fine mist of salt solution at elevated temperatures. The test simulates years of real-world coastal exposure in a matter of days or weeks.
What Happens When Security Screens Lack Corrosion Resistance?
lower-grade stainless steel mesh or improperly finished products-can begin corroding within months on a coastal property. The visible signs include:
- Rust spots spreading across the mesh surface
- Pitting corrosion that creates microscopic holes and weak points
- Loss of tensile strength as corrosion eats into wire strands
A screen that looked secure at installation may become dangerously compromised after just one or two coastal seasons.
WeaveTecMesh: Engineered for Coastal Conditions
WeaveTec security screens are manufactured using high-grade 316 stainless steel specifically selected for marine environment performance. Our mesh undergoes independent salt spray testing per Neutral Salt Spray Test AS2331.3.1/Salt Spray Test:2000Hour(s) to verify corrosion resistance.
- 900±40MPa(860-940MPa) tensile strength (as discussed in our previous article)
- Marine-grade 316 stainless steel
- Proper powder coating or passivation for additional surface protection
- Regular rinsing of screens with fresh water in extreme salt spray zones
A security screen is a long-term investment in safety. In coastal environments, corrosion is the single biggest threat to that investment. Salt spray testing provides objective, verifiable proof that a product will perform as promised-year after year, even in the harshest marine conditions.
